1. How do I sign up for the Summer Reading program?

There is no need to sign up or register! You can print off the log from our website, pick up one from the library, or create your own and immediately start tracking your reading, listening, and learning. Just remember to bring your log back to the library when you’re done so that you can pick up your free book.

2. How old do I have to be to participate in the Summer Reading program?

People of all ages- from newborn babies to adults- can do Summer Reading. Kids from birth to those entering grade 5 can participate in the Kids Summer Reading program. Teens entering grades 6-12 and just graduated from high school can participate in the Teen Summer Reading program, and adults can participate in the Adult Summer Reading program.

3. I’m just finishing 5th grade this year—do I join the Kids or the Teen Summer Reading program?

If you are entering 6th grade in the fall, you get to participate in the Teen Summer Reading program!

4. What do I have to do to participate in the Summer Reading program?

Just complete 15 hours of reading, listening (audiobooks or being read to), or doing a family activity. If you aren’t reading on your own yet, each book you listen to or have someone read to you counts as 30 minutes. Then come to the library to get your free book!

5. Do I have to read a certain kind of book?

Not at all! You can read fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels and comic books, newspapers, magazines, eBooks, blogs and more. You can listen to someone read to you or listen to an audiobook or podcast - even reading the cereal box when you eat breakfast counts as reading in the Summer Reading program. Also, learning in other ways counts this summer! You can count time participating in storytimes and other library programs and the time you spend doing family activities together.

6. Do I have to read for 15 hours in a row?

You can spread out your reading however you’d like - we recommend you read at least 20 minutes a day. If you don’t read for a 30 minutes at a time, you can color in a partial shape in your Reading Log. For example, if you read 20 minutes, then you color in two-thirds of a shape. Color in half of a shape for 30 minutes, a quarter of a shape for 15 minutes, and so on.

7. The log mentions participating in library programs and doing family activities. Do I have to do those things?

No, you do not have to. You can read for all 15 hours, listen to audiobooks for all 15 hours, learn through family activities for all 15 hours, or do a mix!

8. I am an avid reader, and will probably read for 30 or even 45 hours this summer! Can I do the Summer Reading Program more than once?

We are so happy that you like reading so much! Please keep reading! Because we have a limited number of books, we can only give rewards for the first 15 hours that you read.

9. I signed up at a different public library; can I pick up prizes at Beaverton City Library?

No, each library has its own Summer Reading program. You must complete the Summer Reading program at just one library.

10. When can I pick up my free book after finishing my log?

Between July 5 - August 15, 2022

11. Can I do the Summer Reading program at more than one library?

Please participant in only one Summer Reading program this summer.
