Caregivers develop a wealth of tools around reducing personal stress, changing negative self-talk, communicating needs to family and health care or service providers, communicating effectively in challenging situations, and more. On Jan. 22, 2025, Washington County identified 940 people experiencing homelessness in our county. In this presentation, Dr. Zapata, Director of PSU's Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative, will answer some core questions about homelessness: What are some of the root causes? How can we prevent and resolve it? What are local governments doing to address the issue? What tangible actions can we as everyday citizens take to help end homelessness? Join us for a powerful panel discussion as part of the Belonging Speaker Series, centered on building a community of belonging through connection, learning, empathy, and shared experience. This thought-provoking conversation will feature individuals with lived experience of houselessness, alongside local non-profit leaders, frontline service providers, and housing experts. Together, they will explore the human realities of homelessness and the complex systems that contribute to today’s housing crisis. Note: Attend Homelessness 101 with Dr. Marisa Zapata on Jan. 5 for valuable context on the systemic and historical roots of the housing crisis, which will enrich your experience of this panel.

Beaverton City Library is working with Coraggio Group to create a new strategic plan. The Library Services Survey is open Nov. 6 - Dec. 17. Community focus groups are Wednesday, Dec. 3, 6-7:30 PM and Thursday, Dec. 11, 6-7:30 PM (virtual) and Wednesday, Dec. 10, 6:30-8 PM and Tuesday, Jan. 6, 6:30-8 PM (in person at the main library). If you would like to participate in a strategic planning focus group, please register for one of the sessions. We will send a reminder two days before the event.

Free citizenship classes provided by SOAR Immigration Legal Services. Classes are designed to prepare you for the US naturalization interview and exam. Study US history and civics lessons (128 questions on citizenship exam); improve your English speaking, listening, writing, and reading; practice for the naturalization interview; and review the N-400 application. Learn how to be a SAVVY Caregiver! This 3-week series is for unpaid family and friends that are supporting someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Join us to gain a better understanding of Alzheimer’s and related dementias, develop self-care strategies, learn skills and strategies to successfully provide daily activities of "Contented Involvement" for their family member living with dementia, and identify and engage family and other resources for care-related assistance and support.
